Endovascular & Interventional 2022 CMS Fee Impact

On November 2, 2021, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the final rule for the CY2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) resulting in significant Medicare pay cuts for Endovascular & Interventional Specialists.

According to CMS, “The calendar year (CY) 2022 PFS final rule is one of several rules that reflect a broader Administration-wide strategy to create a health care system that results in better accessibility, quality, affordability, empowerment, and innovation.”  See CMS Fact Sheet Press Release.

Impact Analysis: Below is a national average global allowed amount impact analysis of procedures commonly performed in Office-Based POS 11 (Clinics & OBLs) and POS 24 (ASCs).

Primary Causes of Reductions: The reductions are largely related to decreases in practice expense RVUs and the expiration of the 3.75 percent temporary CY 2021 payment increase provided by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 (CAA).  The CY 2022 PFS conversion factor is now $33.59, a decrease of $1.30 from the CY 2021 PFS conversion factor of $34.89.
